May 4th is known among fans as “Star Wars Day”, and it is the perfect excuse – not that you need one – to celebrate your dedication or opposition to the Rebel Alliance. As you’re binge watching all the Star Wars movies today, take a minute and imagine that you could actually be on some of these planets (ok, I’d probably skip Hoth, I'm not sure there's enough warm clothes in the universe for me) While we can’t buy you a ticket to Endor just yet, here are some real life Star Wars destinations that you’ll want to visit:
The Theed Royal Palace on Naboo, which served the Royal House in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones is set in the Royal Palace of Caserta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Naples, Italy. You can tour the inside of the Palace and the garden for less than € 15 and transport yourself to Naboo for a short visit. After you leave Naboo, enjoy more of Italy – use Naples as home base and explore Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, the Amalfi Coast, and the island of Capri. Naples also has some of the best food in Italy, from espresso and coffee to the Neapolitan pizza.
If you want to see a little more of Naboo, hop over to Plaza España in Seville, Spain, which served as the backdrop for Theed in both Episode I and Episode II. Seville, the capital of Andalusia, is home to three different UNESCO World Heritage Sites you can't miss while you're there: the Cathedral, the Real Alcazar, and the Archivo de Indias.
Don’t forget to stop at the Imperial Security Complex on Scarif, more commonly known as London’s Canary Warf Tube Station with the iconic Norman Foster-designed escalators and glass safety doors that are unmistakable in the film.
If the stormy planet of Eadu is your dream stop, head to Iceland, used as the setting for Eadu. Reynisfjara, near the seaside town of Vik, is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the black sand beach made of crushed volcanic lava. If you want to see a glacier while you’re here, both the Myrdalsjokull and Eyarfjordurjokull glaciers are nearby, but you may want to add a few days in Reykjavik as well for a Golden Circle tour, lava tubes, hot springs, the Blue Lagoon, and much more.
If you could go on a vacation in Star Wars, which planet would you pick to visit? Let us know where you would go and May the Fourth be with you!
